The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 is the first of its kind in Canada.
In response to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabiliites Act, 2005, the Kenora Catholic District School Board initiated the board's Accessibility Committee. The Accessibility Committee is comprised of board employees and a diverse cross-section of the community who are working together to ensure our schools and facilities are accessible for people with disabilities. The Accessibility Committee audits our schools for the little things that may be taken for granted such as wheel-chair access, the placement of door handles, light switches, soap dispensers and even the acoustics in a gymnasium or classroom.
The purpose of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act is to improve opportunities for people with disabilities and to provide for their involvement in the indentification, removal and prevention of barriers to their full participation in the life of the province. It is the Accessibility Committee's responsibility to develop, implement and evaluate the board's annual accessibility plan and to ensure the continual improvement of access to board facilities, policies, programs, practices and services for students, staff, parents and guardians, and community members with disabilites.
