“The best succession planning practices are proactive … Talented individuals are identified early and nurtured throughout their careers through professional development that is integrated into human resource management.” (The Learning Partnership, p. 11).
The Kenora Catholic District School Board’s succession plan includes:
ü Providing active support from their leadership team;
ü Linking succession planning to strategic planning;
ü Identifying talent from multiple levels of an organization early in the employees career;
ü Providing opportunities that emphasize developmental assignments, not just formal training;
ü Offering interesting projects and assignments that stretch and challenge;
ü Addressing diversity, leadership capacity, and retention of high-potential candidates, especially those from under represented groups;
ü Using succession planning to facilitate broader transformation of the organization and inspiring the leadership to champion change.
Incorporating School Board employee input as plans are developed, and assigning specific responsibilities within the school system for reviewing and the progress of employees.
