For the past 15 years, the Junior Band program at St. Thomas Aquinas has been giving Grade 5 and 6 students the chance to discover the joy of music. Led by Director of Music Darcy Ura and music teacher Eric Harty, the program introduces young musicians to the fundamentals of playing in an ensemble while building confidence and fostering a love for the arts.

This year, the program has taken on a workshop format to allow a deeper focus on other aspects of the school’s extensive music program. “The goal is to give students an opportunity to try a new musical experience and become familiar with the music program before Grade 7,” explains Ura. “We find that students come into junior high with greater confidence, which encourages them to get involved in social and extracurricular activities.”

Students select their instruments in early fall, choosing from four main woodwind instruments that form the foundation of the program. As they progress through the grades, they’re introduced to a wider variety of instruments and musical opportunities.

The benefits of the Junior Band program extend beyond the classroom. According to Ura, participation has led to a noticeable increase in the number of students continuing with music throughout their years at St. Thomas Aquinas.

For Ura and Harty, the most rewarding part of leading the Junior Band is watching students enjoy the process of learning music. “It’s great to see kids having fun while engaging their brains in a way that’s unique to other types of learning,” says Ura. “There’s something special about students working together toward a common goal and enjoying every moment of it.”

The Junior Band program is more than just an introduction to music—it’s a stepping stone to lasting confidence, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

For many students, the Junior Band is more than just a class—it’s a highlight of their school experience. Emily, a Grade 5 student at SMB, shares, "It's just so fun to come to TA and learn an instrument. I will for sure be coming back next year."

Ethan, a Grade 6 student from SJPII in his second year of Junior Band, echoes that excitement: "I love that you can meet new friends and like learning to play an instrument."

Lourayne, also in Grade 6 at SJPII, adds, "You learn a lot from music. You make new friends and have new experiences. Next year, I'm definitely going to try out more instruments."
