Over the past 10 weeks, our Saints girls hockey team took part in an inspiring journey of leadership, empowerment, and community impact through the Athletes as Leaders (AAL) program. This initiative was made possible thanks to the guidance of Chrysti Savage from the Women’s Shelter, Saakaate House, who led weekly sessions with the team.

Meeting one hour before their regular practices, our student-athletes explored topics around inclusion, respect, empathy, and teamwork. The Athletes as Leaders program encourages high school athletes to step into their roles as leaders—on and off the ice—creating a culture of kindness, support, and equity.

With the support of Chrysti and each other, the team worked toward two main goals:

  • Long-Term: Shifting social norms to promote equity, reduce harm, and foster safe, inclusive environments for all students.

  • Short-Term: Building leadership skills and encouraging positive behaviors rooted in respect and integrity.

We’re incredibly proud of our Saints girls hockey team for setting a strong example of what it means to be leaders—not just in sport, but in life. Their commitment to growth, advocacy, and community well-being is truly something to celebrate.

🎥 Be sure to check out the video featuring interviews with team members and Chrysti Savage to hear more about their experience and the impact of this powerful program.
