Celebrating Faith Leadership Across KCDSB

Faith formation is at the heart of everything we do in our KCDSB schools, and this year our Faith Leaders are finding creative, heartfelt, and meaningful ways to help students connect with God, with one another, and with the world around them.

We are grateful for the dedication and leadership of Chantal Ouellette (SMB), Laurel Dufresne (SJPII), Ashley Nason (SJS) and Kerri Favreau (STL), who guide students and staff in living our Catholic values every day, nurturing school communities rooted in compassion, service, prayer, and joy.

ST. LOUIS LIVING ARTS SCHOOL: Faith Through the Living Arts

At St. Louis, Faith Leader Kerri Favreau is helping students discover how the Living Arts can lead them deeper into their relationship with God. The school believes this work is truly “work of the heart,” and students have been exploring their faith through hands-on, meaningful experiences.

At the beginning of the school year, students reflected on how their school beehives symbolize what it means to live in community with God and others. Each class considered their call to serve at school, at home, and in the greater world. Students extracted honey from the beehive frames, and the honey was later blessed by Father Allen during a special school Mass. Afterward, students used the honey to make honey cakes, which were shared in celebration.

A major focus this year is increasing meaningful student involvement in school liturgies. Each class now takes turns serving as “hosts,” giving students a chance to help plan and lead Masses and Prayer Services. Members of the school choir have also begun taking on the role of cantors, confidently leading Mass parts and psalms. With students so actively involved, the school has seen a wonderful increase in family attendance and participation.

The school also celebrated Thanksgiving in a special way this year. Each class prepared part of a communal meal that included turkey soup, homemade buns, pies, and even freshly churned butter, thanks to the help of volunteers from the community.

As the school moves into November, students are preparing a new faith-filled project inspired by the book Cooking With the Saints. Each class will choose a saint and a recipe to cook together, then share what they’ve learned about their saint during a school-wide assembly.

SCHOOL COMMUNITIES UNITED IN FAITH

Across all of our schools, Faith Leaders continue to create welcoming, prayerful environments where students feel connected, supported, and inspired. Whether it’s through liturgical celebrations, social justice initiatives, classroom reflections, or community-building activities, Chantal, Laurel, Ashley, and Kerri are helping students see how faith is lived out each day in big and small ways.

Their leadership reminds us that faith formation isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we experience together, as a family of schools.

Experiencing Faith Through the Living Arts

At St. Louis, Faith Leader Kerri Favreau has woven faith deeply into the school’s Living Arts philosophy. Students learn that faith is “work of the heart,” explored through creativity, hands-on learning, and reflection.

Bees, Honey, and Community

At the start of the school year, students reflected on their school beehives as a symbol of living in community with God and with one another. Each class considered how they are called to serve — at school, at home, and in the wider community. Students extracted honey from the hives, which was later blessed by Father Allen during a special school Mass. The honey was then used to make honey cakes that were joyfully shared.

Students Taking the Lead

A key focus at STL is increasing student involvement in liturgical life. Each class now takes turns serving as “hosts” for Masses and Prayer Services, giving students opportunities to plan, read, serve, and participate with purpose. Members of the choir have also stepped into the role of cantors, confidently leading Mass parts and psalms. This increased leadership has brought more families into the school’s celebrations, strengthening the community in heartfelt ways.

Faith Through Food and Storytelling

The school’s Thanksgiving Celebration was another highlight, with each class preparing part of a shared meal including turkey soup, pies, homemade buns, and butter churned with the help of community volunteers.

Looking ahead, classes will be exploring Cooking With the Saints, choosing a saint, preparing a related recipe, and sharing their learning at an upcoming assembly.

SMB: Building a Welcoming and Reflective Faith Space

Faith Leader Chantal Ouellette at École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys is creating inviting spaces and gentle moments of reflection that help students and staff feel connected to their faith throughout the school day.

A New Faith Space in the Making

The school is developing a dedicated Catholic Faith Space that will serve as a quiet, welcoming place for prayer. Beginning in the New Year, staff will be invited to gather here for morning devotions. A stained-glass-style painted cross fills the window with colour, symbolizing God’s light shining through the SMB community.

Faith Woven Throughout the School

Faith is visible in many corners of the building. Three themed bulletin boards highlight the liturgical seasons and special celebrations, while monthly Bible verses and reflections are posted inside restrooms — offering small but meaningful reminders of God’s presence throughout the day.

Gathering in Faith and Gratitude

Community plays a big role at SMB. Mme. Oswald and her Kindergarten students recently hosted a Thanksgiving Family Gathering, welcoming loved ones into the school for a time of gratitude and togetherness. The school also held a thoughtful Remembrance Day Prayer Service that brought families and students together to pray, remember, and reflect.
