Amanda Stefanile, Program Manager for the Lakehead University Achievement Program, joined the April 21 Regular Board Meeting virtually to share an overview of the program and its growing partnership with KCDSB and St. John Paul II School.
The Lakehead University Achievement Program supports students who may face barriers to post-secondary education by helping them build confidence, connections, and long-term educational goals beginning as early as Grade 4. Through the program, students and families participate in school, community, and university-based experiences designed to encourage future success and open pathways to college and university opportunities.
KCDSB recently partnered with the program through St. John Paul II School, where students are now participating in the initiative alongside schools from across Northwestern Ontario.
During her presentation, Amanda Stefanile shared a video highlighting the impact of the Lakehead University Achievement Program and the experiences of participating students and families. The video showcased how the program is helping students build confidence, develop connections, and explore future pathways to post-secondary education.
She also shared encouraging program outcomes, including strong student retention rates, increased graduation success, and growing numbers of students pursuing post-secondary education. Trustees learned that many participating students self-identify as Indigenous, with the program placing a strong emphasis on culturally responsive supports and community partnerships.
Board Chair Teresa Gallik thanked Amanda Stefanile for the presentation and recognized the positive impact the partnership is already having within the KCDSB community.
“This program is creating meaningful opportunities for students and families while helping young people see new possibilities for their future,” said Teresa Gallik, Chair of the Board. “We are grateful for the partnership with Lakehead University and the commitment to supporting student success, belonging, and confidence from an early age.”
Trustees also heard about future regional programming opportunities planned throughout Northwestern Ontario, including upcoming student engagement events in Dryden later this spring.
KCDSB looks forward to continuing its partnership with the Lakehead University Achievement Program and supporting students as they explore future pathways in education, leadership, and career development.
