KCDSB celebrates grads in health care

Kenora Catholic honours grads in health careFrom October 4-9, Kenora Catholic is celebrating National Catholic Health Care Week by recognizing graduates of St. Thomas Aquinas High School who have gone on to dedicate their lives to serve others by entering the health care profession.

We know these last few years have been difficult for everyone, but especially those in health care. We thank you for your kindness, courage and for being there for us when we need you most.

I chose to go into healthcare because I have always believed in and enjoyed learning about science. Being able to see how disease prevention, like vaccines, and disease management, like medicine, works in the human body is very interesting and rewarding to be a part of. My Catholic education at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School helped me achieve my goals by setting me up for success. The friendly and small classrooms allowed to me excel in sciences! The Catholic presence provided guidance in establishing my personal values. Thank you STAH!

I decided to become a physician after spending time working with vulnerable populations. I always loved Science and I felt that medicine may be the best way I can contribute to society and helping vulnerable populations. My teacher’s at St. Thomas Aquinas High School were nothing short of amazing and they supported my interest in Sciences and Math. I think Becca Garrow, Bailey Charlebois and I drove Mr. Hummelbrunner and Mr. Pavey nuts from Grades 9-12 because we were in every science and math class they taught with our desks pulled together. They always went above and beyond to help students.

I actually followed in my Mom's footsteps of becoming a nurse. I have always wanted to help people. I decided I wanted to become a nurse when I was in Grade 4 and I never changed my mind once! I love my job! I had such a positive experience going to high school at St. Thomas Aquinas. My teachers were amazing in helping me succeed at following my dream of becoming a nurse. Even if that meant Mr. Pavey tutoring me after class in calculus to help me pass! I wouldn’t be where I am today without each person I was able to cross paths with at St. Thomas Aquinas High School!

We wanted to work in a challenging and exciting field where we had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. We credit our successes in university to the above-average science education we received in high school. Our biology and chemistry teacher went above and beyond. He taught us what it takes to succeed as a university student and enabled us to obtain an Advanced Placement biology credit in our final year of high school, giving us a valuable head-start in our first year of our Bachelor of Nursing.
