Three students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School gave back to their community today by helping out at the new Habitat for Humanity build.

"We're pouring the foundation for the house," said Andrew MacPherson. "It's a good opportunity to give back to the community."

Bernie Kelly is the treasurer for Habitat Kenora and she spoke about getting the students' help.

"I think it's great. It's great for the work experience, the volunteer aspect and the community work. They seem to be enjoying it too, they've got smiles on their faces. They can also learn a little bit about what habitat does and how it works," she said.

"Just how many people it takes to build a house. It's definitely not a one person job," he said.

Merry said the opportunity was set up by fellow teacher Jeff Richards in the Co-op department.

The house is being built on 4th Street North. The family was selected over a year ago. Already they've been very involved with the build and are very much looking forward to moving into their new home.

Kelly says they're always looking for more volunteers.

"Having no experience with construction is not a problem at all. There's always lumber to be moved, floors to be swept. You name it and we'll find a job for you," she said.
