Four students were surprised at today's morning assembly by being named the winners of the FIREFLY logo contest. Laura McNulty, Maggie Carlson, Maddyn Hughes and Rylie Kosloski won the contest which invited students across Northwestern Ontario to submit their ideas for FIREFLY's values highlighted in their 2019-2022 strategic plan.

The values the children had to illustrate were Heart, Sharing and Playing Together, Empowerment, Reaching Beyond and Accountability. Because FIREFLY serves children, youth and families, it was important to them that their clients understand what each of those values means, so they decided to have a visual representation for each value.

Area school boards were invited to have their elementary students participate in the FIREFLY values logo contest. Four schools from the Kenora Catholic District School Board and the Keewatin Patricia District School Board participated in the contest. Classes from SMB, Pope John Paul II, New Prospect and Open Roads School participated. Overall, FIREFLY received 72 drawings.

An internal steering committee reviewed the drawings and selected 3-4 pictures they felt best represented the values. Over the last four weeks, staff and the public were invited to vote for their favourite in a weekly survey. Laura McNulty won for her submission for Heart, Maggie Carlson won for Sharing and Playing Together, Maddyn Hughes designed the winning logo for Empowerment and Rylie Kosloski won for Reaching Beyond.

The new logos will be used in the Strategic Plan and on documents and merchandise moving forward.
