The Kenora Catholic District School Board is proud to announce that Julia Tkachuk, Grade 10 student from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, is the Board's new junior student trustee for the 2019 - 2020 school year. She will be joining Clareynze Ceria at the Boardroom table who will assume the mentor role held by Dominique Novelli in 2018 - 2019. Ceria is Kenora Catholic's first student trustee to serve the Board for a two-year term. She will provide mentorship and support to Julia Tkachuk, in her position as student trustee during the 2019 -2020 school year.

Julia Tkachuk Announced as Incoming Student TrusteeIn a presentation to the Board at the June 18th Board Meeting, Dominique Novelli introduced Julia Tkachuk as the incoming Student Trustee. "Julia Tkachuk was voted in by her peers and will help bring forward the views and ideas of students. She is devoted to her Catholic education and is involved in the school community. She is part of the St. Thomas Aquinas High School Rally Team and involved in many aspects of the arts. I know that Julia and Clareynze will make a great team next year."

Julia Tkachuk is looking forward to the new responsibility. "I have actually looked up to Dom and Clare for a really long time and I'm really excited to be a part of this and have my own opportunity to have my own voice."

As Novelli prepares for graduation, he reflected on his term as student trustee.

"I thought being a student trustee was an amazing experience. It was really cool to always be in the know of what was going on in the school, and it was an honour to represent all the students from our school and from Kenora Catholic as a whole."

Novelli shared advice for preparing for the Student Trustee role.

"My biggest words of advice would probably be just get involved in the school in as many ways as you can. It helps you to really know what is going on, and you are able to connect with every student in the school, so you are not just reporting on a certain section or certain part of the school - but you are getting a wide range of what is going on."

Novelli is attending Carlton University in the fall on an entrance scholarship. He plans on doing his undergraduate and attending law school in the future.

Teresa Gallik, Chair made a presentation to the student trustees at the Board Meeting thanking, Dominique Novelli and Clareynze Ceria for their service during the 2018 - 2019 school year.

Student trustees serve an essential role within the Kenora Catholic District School Board. They represent the voice of students at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Kenora Catholic. They help keep students informed about decisions affecting education, and what is happening at the board and throughout the system. They make monthly reports at the Regular Board Meeting and are called upon to be involved in special projects for the Board.
