Celebrating a Strong Season in the 2025 KCDSB Ski and Snowboard Program

Students across the Kenora Catholic District School Board enjoyed another successful season of the Ski and Snowboard Program this winter. From mid-February to early March, students in Grades 4 to 6 from St. Louis Living Arts School, École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys, and St. John Paul II School, along with Grades 7 and 8 students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, spent their afternoons at Mount Evergreen Ski Club building skills and enjoying time outdoors.

The program continues to be a meaningful part of our winter activities. Students had the chance to try new skills, strengthen their balance and coordination, and gain confidence on the slopes. For many, it was their first time learning how to ski or snowboard. For others, it was an opportunity to practise and improve in a supportive environment with guidance from certified instructors who helped students progress safely and comfortably.

Our long-standing partnership with Mount Evergreen Ski Club remains a key part of the program’s success. Their team provides a safe, well-maintained environment, and their certified instructors help students learn techniques, understand proper equipment use, and build confidence step by step. This partnership ensures that our students receive high-quality instruction and a positive experience on the hill.

Megan Derouard, Healthy Active Living Lead, shared:

“Each year we see students really grow through this program. They learn at their own pace, support one another, and build confidence as they spend more time on the hill. What they practise on the slopes, such as perseverance, problem solving, and staying focused, translates directly into the classroom. These skills help students feel more capable and ready to take on new learning. We are also very thankful to parents and guardians for their support, which plays a big part in making this experience possible for students.”

Across all four schools, the feedback was positive. Staff noted how students encouraged each other, showed perseverance, and took pride in mastering new skills. The strong partnership with Mount Evergreen Ski Club continues to provide a safe and welcoming setting where students can stay active, learn new techniques, and enjoy a healthy Canadian winter.

This program also plays an important role in supporting students with their transition to high school and in strengthening our athletics pathway across the board. Opportunities like these promote student achievement, help students learn new skills, and encourage healthy relationship building. The Ski and Snowboard Program remains an important part of Kenora Catholic’s winter sports and recreation offerings, and we are proud to continue providing experiences that support the whole student.

We are already looking ahead to the 2026 Ski and Snowboard Program and look forward to welcoming students back to the slopes.
