Since 2014, a gentle and meaningful Christmas tradition has continued at the Kenora Catholic District School Board (KCDSB). Each Advent season, a nativity scene is set in place, featuring Mary and Joseph beneath a beautiful star, waiting in quiet anticipation.
The tradition began with a shared reflection. As a Catholic school board, it felt important to visibly honour the Christmas story. Maintenance was asked to help bring that vision to life, and what followed was a true act of community. With guidance from Sr. Maria Ciccarelli, the focus was placed where it belonged, on the Holy Family.
Nancy Barclay, who was a teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas High School at the time, generously shared her artistic gifts. Her care and creativity helped bring warmth to the figures, ensuring the scene felt reverent, welcoming, and true to its purpose.
Members of the Maintenance team at the time, including Andrew, Will, Gerard, and others, worked together to build the stable and manger, thoughtfully creating a display that could be cared for and returned year after year. Many hands contributed, each playing a role in shaping what would become a lasting tradition. One practical update was needed along the way. A bit of mesh was added across the front to keep the neighbourhood deer from helping themselves to baby Jesus’s manger hay.
Just before Christmas, the tradition reaches its most meaningful moment. A staff member quietly lays baby Jesus in the manger. There is no announcement or ceremony. It is a simple, sacred act that marks the heart of the season.
Now, baby Jesus has been laid in the manger, completing the Holy Family. Families and community members are warmly invited to visit and take a quiet moment of reflection. The manger scene at 1292 Heenan Place is beautifully lit at night, with the star shining overhead, guiding the way, and offering a peaceful and welcoming presence.
More than a display, this nativity is a living tradition. It reflects the faith of the KCDSB community and the dedication of the staff who brought it together and who continue, quietly and faithfully, to ensure it remains a place of hope, reverence, and Christmas peace.
With sincere thanks to all KCDSB staff, past and present, who have played a role in creating, caring for, and continuing this meaningful Christmas tradition, with special appreciation to Joe and the current Maintenance team for ensuring it continues today.
