Few students have the opportunity to sit at the Board table and witness the governance process firsthand. Over the past year, Student Trustees Thia Payash-Ogemah and Jacob Silva have done just that, representing their peers while building connections with Trustees and learning more about how Catholic education is guided and supported.
At their final Board Meeting, Chair Teresa Gallik thanked the pair for their dedication, thoughtfulness, and professionalism throughout the 2025-2026 school year.
"Your presence at the Board table has helped keep us connected to the experiences, perspectives, and hopes of the students we serve," said Gallik. "Together, you have been an exceptional team."
For Thia, becoming a Student Trustee was an opportunity to gain insight into different areas of the school board while representing her fellow students. One of her biggest takeaways was developing a deeper understanding of leadership and the importance of listening, asking thoughtful questions, and advocating for others. After graduation, she plans to take a gap year before pursuing university and obtaining her cheer coaching licence.
Jacob was inspired to serve as a Student Trustee because of his desire to represent student interests and be a positive leader within the school community. He especially enjoyed supporting fellow students and gaining a greater appreciation for the many ways schools work to enhance student life. The experience also helped him build confidence in public speaking, a skill he will carry with him as he begins an Environmental Sciences Co-op program at the University of Guelph this fall.
As they concluded their term of office, each Student Trustee was presented with a handcrafted glass cross in KCDSB colours. The cross serves as a lasting reminder of their service and their place within the Kenora Catholic family.
Tonight marks the final Board Meeting and presentation for both Student Trustees. In September, Alexis Greene and Celeste Temple will begin their term of office, continuing the important role of representing student voice within the Kenora Catholic District School Board.
The Board extends its sincere thanks to Thia and Jacob for their contributions throughout the year and wishes them every blessing and success in the future.
