Strengthening Cybersecurity Across KCDSB

Over the past year, the Kenora Catholic District School Board has continued to strengthen its approach to cybersecurity through thoughtful planning, technology improvements, and strong collaboration across schools and departments. This work supports a safe and reliable digital environment for staff and students, while reinforcing trust in the systems we use every day.

Cyber awareness remains a key focus in our schools. As learning becomes increasingly digital, knowing how to recognize and respond to online threats is essential. These habits help protect data, support smooth classroom operations, and build confidence for both staff and students. By embedding digital citizenship into daily practice, we are helping our community stay informed and safe at school and beyond.

A number of initiatives have supported staff in developing stronger cyber smart habits. Training sessions, simulated phishing exercises, and shared examples of real scenarios have helped staff become more confident in spotting and reporting suspicious activity. The Board has also strengthened internal safeguards by disabling removable storage on Board devices to reduce the risk of accidental data exposure.

Devin Ryan, Manager of IT, has seen meaningful growth across the system. “Our staff have become much more engaged in conversations about online safety. They are asking questions, reporting concerns quickly, and taking an active role in keeping our systems secure. That shift shows how far we have come together.”

This past year, the Board also strengthened privileged access controls. This included reviewing access to sensitive internal resources, refining permissions, and improving oversight to ensure elevated access is granted only when needed. These changes support accountability and reduce risk across our digital environment.

Protecting personal information is an ongoing responsibility. KCDSB uses a multi layered approach that includes policy, technology, and continuous learning. Clear processes, secure systems, and strong internal partnerships ensure that data is handled responsibly throughout the organization.

Looking ahead, KCDSB will continue to focus on optimization, automation, and long term planning to support a safe and resilient digital environment. Training and awareness remain central, and the Board will continue to prioritize clear reporting pathways and up to date practices that empower staff and students to stay cyber smart.

Devin Ryan shared his appreciation for the progress made this year. “Cybersecurity is something we all play a part in. The progress we have made reflects the hard work of staff across every department, along with the support of our provincial partners and community. When we work together, we create a safer and more informed digital environment for everyone at KCDSB.”
