Assessment and Evaluation Changes for 2026–2027

Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, the Ontario Ministry of Education has introduced new assessment and evaluation requirements for students in Grades 9 to 12.

The changes provide a more consistent approach to assessment and evaluation across Ontario secondary schools and include new requirements for attendance and participation and final evaluations.

How Final Grades Are Calculated

Grades 9 and 10

65% – Classroom work completed throughout the course
20% – Mandatory final evaluation
15% – Attendance and participation

Grades 11 and 12

65% – Classroom work completed throughout the course
25% – Mandatory final evaluation
10% – Attendance and participation

The Ministry has established specific requirements for final evaluations based on the grade and subject. Most secondary courses require a written final examination, while some courses include both a written examination and a culminating task. Some courses and subject areas are exempt from the mandatory written examination requirement.

Attendance and Participation

Attendance and participation now form part of a student's final course grade. Excused absences do not negatively affect a student's mark.

The Ministry's assessment criteria consider both a student's unexcused absences and participation in learning. Participation includes how consistently a student:

- participates in class discussions and contributes ideas;
- asks relevant questions;
- respects the contributions of others; and
- contributes to a positive classroom culture.

Families should continue to report student absences promptly through STAHS's regular attendance procedures.

Final Evaluations and Written Examinations

Beginning in 2026–2027, most secondary courses require a written final examination. Written final exams take place during the designated examination period, with the exception of the EQAO Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics, which serves as the written exam for MTH1W and accounts for 20% of the final course mark.

Families are encouraged to avoid scheduling vacations, appointments or other commitments during examination periods.

Supporting Student Success

Regular attendance, punctuality and active participation in learning are important to student success. Families are encouraged to communicate with the school about circumstances that may affect a student's attendance or academic progress.

Teachers and staff will continue to work with students and families to provide support when needed.
