Applied Education Systems defines Digital Citizenship as the responsible use of technology by anyone who uses computers, the internet, and other digital devices to engage with society on any level.

Throughout the week we will be putting an extra emphasis on some of the important skills and safety measures that come with living in the digital age.

During the week students will be learning about these topics:

Rights and Responsibilities of a Digital Citizen:
Just like in person, we have a growing list of rights and responsibilities that allow us to become positive digital citizens. Students are taught the importance of privacy, safety, sourcing work, and the responsibility to treat others the way that they would like to be treated.

Digital Footprint:
As users of the internet, we all leave behind a permanent footprint of our activity in that digital world. A Digital Footprint is a record of everything you do online including profiles, subscriptions, sites visited, posts, etc. Students learn that their digital footprint is permanent which is why it’s important to show our best selves online.

Thinking Critically:
Anyone can post to the internet which makes it more important than ever that users think critically about the content they are seeing/reading. Students learn about video/image editing used to convey a specific message and what misinformation is and how easily it can be spread to a large audience.

Knowing When to Log Off:
In this digital age, screens are everywhere and we’re spending an increasing amount of time in front of them. Students are reminded of the health benefits related to building strong relationships, physical movement, and the outdoors. Students are encouraged to set goals for themselves to decrease their screen time.

How can you reinforce digital citizenship at home?

Be a Positive Role Model!
Before posting images of your child, ask for their permission. Children, in turn, will learn this courtesy rather than posting about others without their consent.

Discuss Privacy Settings!
Review app and website settings with your child so that they are aware of what kind of information is being shared with third parties or advertising companies.

Think Before you Post!
Remind your child that, like in person, their actions are important. When it comes to posting comments, images or even visiting certain websites - if they wouldn’t want a parent or teacher seeing it, they should probably reconsider putting it online.
