The Kenora Catholic District School Board’s (KCDSB) English Language Learner (ELL) program is experiencing tremendous growth, thanks to innovative strategies and dedicated support from staff like Ryan Larson, the Board’s English as a Second Language Tutor.
Since September 2024, the program has welcomed 25 new ELL students, more than doubling last year’s total. Currently, 48 students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds are thriving under this program.
"It's a joy to welcome so many new students and their families to the KCDSB," said Ryan Larson. "Each student brings unique experiences and perspectives that enrich our school communities, and it's an honour to support them as they grow and succeed."
Ryan Larson’s expertise has brought innovative tools and resources to support ELL students. These include:
•
Technology Integration: Students use tablets and translation apps to bridge language gaps and participate more fully in class. At St. Thomas Aquinas High School (STAHS), live translation tools, such as Google Translate paired with Bluetooth headphones, are being piloted to support classroom learning and parent-teacher meetings.
•
Customized Support: Ryan collaborates closely with teachers and Learning Resource Teachers (LRTs) to develop tailored strategies for each student. After initial STEP assessments, Ryan meets with teachers to share insights, recommend strategies, and ensure a personalized approach for every learner.
This collaborative focus has led to significant progress. For example, a Grade 9 student in an English course at St. Thomas Aquinas High School started the year struggling to construct sentences. Through careful scaffolding, exemplars, and support, the student has now completed three opinion essays – a remarkable achievement.
“I love being able to work with students and their teachers to make schoolwork accessible and achievable,” Ryan shared. “It’s rewarding to see our ELL students grow and succeed in their learning, social interactions, and school life.”
Beyond academics, Ryan’s role extends to bridging communication between schools and families. Drawing on his experience teaching overseas and working with multicultural groups, Ryan helps families navigate school systems and embrace cultural differences, fostering strong connections between home and school.
The KCDSB ELL program reflects the power of collaboration, innovation, and a student-centred approach, ensuring that every learner has the tools to thrive.
