In an exciting step towards promoting healthier lifestyles, the Kenora Catholic District School Board is proud to offer the You’re The Chef program to students in grades 5 through 8. This engaging after-school initiative, facilitated by leaders trained through the Northwestern Health Unit, aims to inspire a lifelong love of healthy eating and cooking among young learners.

Ashley Orr, KCDSB Occupational Therapist and You’re The Chef program facilitator, shared her enthusiasm for the initiative: "I love how this program encourages creativity, teamwork, and independence. The best moments are when students proudly share what they've made, take ownership of their learning, and even teach their new skills to their families. It is truly special to see their excitement and confidence grow as they learn to prepare healthy, delicious meals."

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in physical health, cognitive development, emotional well-being, and social connections. Yet, a 2014 study found that only 9.6% of students in grades 6 to 8 within the NWHU catchment area met the recommended daily servings for fruits and vegetables. You’re The Chef seeks to address this by offering hands-on culinary experiences that encourage students to explore and enjoy nutritious foods.

Throughout the program’s four sessions, students will learn to prepare simple, delicious recipes aligned with Canada's Food Guide. With an emphasis on incorporating fruits and vegetables, participants will gain essential cooking skills, improve their food safety knowledge, and build confidence in the kitchen. By the end of the program, students are not only equipped to recreate these recipes at home but are also motivated to make healthier food choices.

KCDSB is excited to see students discovering new flavors, developing practical life skills, and sharing their culinary creations with family and friends. With initiatives like You’re The Chef, the school board is committed to supporting the health and well-being of its students, both inside and outside the classroom.
