The Information Technology (IT) Services team at the Kenora Catholic District School Board (KCDSB) played a critical role in 2024, ensuring students and staff had the tools and resources they needed for success. Through innovation and dedication, the team enhanced both learning environments and operational efficiency across the board.
Highlights from 2024
•
Efficient Problem-Solving: The team resolved 1,620 IT support tickets, keeping systems running smoothly. Chromebook screen replacements were a frequent request, and the tried-and-true advice, “Turn it off and on again,” proved an effective starting point for troubleshooting.
•
Innovative Projects and Upgrades:
- Launched a brand-new Mac Lab at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, providing students with advanced tools for learning.
- Streamlined manual processes into digital forms through automation, boosting efficiency.
- Strengthened cybersecurity with new products and configurations to protect systems.

•
Training and Support: Trained new staff on the Student Information System to ensure smooth data management and system use.

Overcoming Challenges
Despite staffing shortages, the IT team prioritized tasks, collaborated with administrators, and rolled out key cyber security initiatives, including phishing campaigns and device lockouts for all staff. By dedicating time to visit schools and provide hands-on support, they ensured a smooth transition for staff adapting to these changes.
“Despite being a smaller board, we manage the same upfront configuration and maintenance tasks required for much larger organizations,” said Devin Ryan, Manager of Information Technology Services. “It’s about optimizing our resources and delivering solutions that truly make a difference.”
Lighter Moments and Dedication
IT work often means being on the move. One team member, Tyler, logged an impressive 24,734 steps in a single workday while tackling a project in July—a testament to the team’s active and hands-on approach.
Positioned for Future Success
Reflecting on their accomplishments in 2024, the IT team remains committed to supporting KCDSB’s goals with a focus on innovation, efficiency, and security.
“Our team’s dedication and resilience have been incredible this year,” said Devin Ryan. “Despite challenges, they’ve consistently gone above and beyond to ensure students and staff have the tools they need. I’m proud to work alongside such a talented and hardworking group. And I’m pleased to share that we are no longer short-staffed, positioning us well for continued success in 2025.”
