The Kenora Catholic District School Board (KCDSB) received a report on mathematics education with its 2024–25 Math Achievement Action Plan. Jordan Temple, Vice Principal at École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys and Board Math Lead, presented an update on the plan at the November 19 Board Meeting. Following his presentation, Trustees endorsed the plan, which aligns with the Ministry of Education’s Taking Action in Mathematics framework and outlines strategies to enhance math achievement across the board.
Focusing on Success: Three Key Priorities
The Math Achievement Action Plan centres on three strategic priorities:
Know the Curriculum
The board emphasizes aligning teaching practices with curriculum standards. Teachers are supported through guidelines, resources, and professional development to ensure long-range and lesson plans meet curriculum expectations and foster essential mathematical understandings.
Know the Math
Teachers leverage data from EQAO results, report cards, and student diagnostics to identify focus areas for professional learning and improve student outcomes. Initiatives like MathUP Classroom and KnowledgeHook are empowering teachers to address knowledge gaps effectively.
Know the Learner
Recognizing and addressing gaps in student understanding is key. Tools such as the Early Mathematical Assessment (EMA) and MATmatics Intervention Tool provide targeted support for students in Grades 1 - 3, helping them build foundational knowledge.
Innovative Partnerships and Tools
KCDSB’s partnerships with institutions like Carleton University are helping to advance innovative practices in mathematics education. Through the Early Mathematical Assessment (EMA) pilot project, KCDSB is refining diagnostic tools and data-driven teaching strategies. Additionally, MathUP Classroom, designed by Dr. Marian Small, and KnowledgeHook offer educators tailored resources to enhance student achievement.
Looking Ahead
The board’s commitment to measurable improvement and continuous learning will guide the implementation of the Math Achievement Action Plan. By focusing on aligning curriculum delivery, supporting teacher development, and prioritizing student-centred learning, KCDSB continues to grow graduates prepared to excel academically and beyond.
