An SMB student whisks up his cupcake batter

The Grade 6 students at École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys whisked their way into the Christmas break by taking part in a classroom Christmas baking championship.

Students were put into pairs and had to find a recipe they could complete in the school kitchen. They were given 20 minutes to prepare the dessert and decorate it, baking or cooling time was not included in the 20 minutes.

Teammates Kale Ouellet and Jake Hodges baked their Christmas tree themed cupcakes last Thursday and spoke about how they chose their recipe.

“We saw them and thought they looked cool and we both like chocolate cake,” said Hodges.

Ouellet says he bakes at home often and spoke about what he took away from the experience.

“I learned that the people on the baking shows don’t have as much time as it sounds like to you watching. It’s very stressful if you mess up and have to restart which, good thing we didn’t have to,” he said.

Not only did Ouellet and Hodges not have to start over, but they baked and decorated a cupcake good enough to be crowned the champions.

“It felt good. I think we did really well. All our cupcakes were good and not dry and they looked really good,” said Hodges.

Second place went to Azalea and Elle with their Christmas cake and third place went to Tate and Gavin who make chocolate Christmas ornaments.
