July was a month of vibrant learning and joyful exploration for students from SMB, SJP, and STL, who participated in the KCDSB Summer Learning Program. This year’s program continued its strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy development, while also incorporating hands-on activities and outdoor experiences, making for an engaging and memorable summer.

Program Highlights:
One of the standout features of the program was the Scientist in Schools sessions, where students delved into interactive science experiments that stimulated their curiosity and fostered a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. These hands-on sessions were a highlight, encouraging young minds to explore and question the world around them.

In a heartwarming community engagement activity, students visited Pinecrest Home for a delightful Teddy-Bear Picnic. This event not only brought smiles to the faces of the students but also to the residents of Pinecrest Home, creating connections and spreading joy through shared experiences.

The program also offered students the opportunity to explore the great outdoors, fostering a love for nature through guided nature explorations. These experiences were designed to deepen students' appreciation for the environment and to inspire a lifelong connection with the natural world.

Creativity was another key focus of the program, with students participating in various artistic activities that allowed them to express themselves and develop their artistic skills. This creative aspect of the program provided a perfect balance to the academic focus, ensuring a well-rounded experience.

A unique and heartening addition to this year’s program was the “Paws to Read” initiative, where students had the chance to read to animals from Kenora Therapeutic Paws. This innovative approach to literacy made reading a fun and rewarding experience, helping students to build confidence and a love for reading in a relaxed, enjoyable setting.

The KCDSB Summer Learning Program was a resounding success, filled with engaging activities and valuable learning experiences. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the students, staff, and community partners who contributed to making this summer program a memorable and impactful experience for everyone involved.
