St. Louis School Choir Shares the Gift of Song Across the Community

The St. Louis School Choir is an important part of the Living Arts program at St. Louis Living Arts School. Rooted in creativity, collaboration, and faith, the choir gives students a meaningful way to express themselves while building confidence and connection. Their voices support school celebrations, parish life, and community events throughout the year.

The success of the choir is shaped in large part by the dedication of Lenard Whiting, the choir director. Lenard generously volunteers at the school twice a week, teaching music theory and vocal technique, selecting the choir’s program, and accompanying the group on piano. He also works closely with Mrs. Favreau and has mentored her in conducting and voice technique. Lenard’s steady leadership, talent, and commitment have been instrumental to the strength and growth of the St. Louis Choir and are deeply appreciated by the school community.

The choir year begins with participation in the school’s Opening Mass at St. Louis Parish, where members are invited to take on the role of cantors. Their leadership in the sung parts of the Mass adds beauty and reverence to this important celebration. Father Allen has often expressed his appreciation for the students. This past year, a blessing of the school’s honey was incorporated into the Mass as part of the Living Arts learning, creating a meaningful connection between faith, creativity, and community.

The choir also shares their gifts widely in the community. Each Christmas season, students take part in a carolling tour, visiting places such as long-term care homes, the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, local grocery stores, City Hall, and the Catholic Education Centre. Their songs brighten the day for residents, patients, staff, and shoppers, creating small but meaningful moments of connection. Their music brings warmth to busy spaces and reminds people of the joy and hope that the holiday season brings.

Each year, the choir is also honoured to perform at the Festival of Trees during the Community Day event. The Festival of Trees is a long-standing fundraiser that features beautifully decorated trees, entertainment, dinner, and both live and silent auctions. All proceeds support the Kenora & Lake of the Woods Community Foundation, which has granted more than $5 million to over fifty local charities since 2004. The St. Louis Choir is regularly featured as part of Kenora’s musical talent, adding a special touch to an event that brings people together for a meaningful cause.

For teacher Kerri Favreau, leading the choir is a deeply meaningful part of her role. “Being involved in the choir has been a very meaningful experience. I have seen first hand how singing together builds confidence and connection. Music has tremendous benefits to learning and wellbeing. Our choir has brought so much joy to others, especially to the choristers themselves.”
