St. John School brings community together with Fall Feast
The sounds of hand drums filled the gym at St. John School earlier this week as they held their annual Fall Feast. The Feast is completely student-led from start to finish and is an event that celebrates the changing of the seasons by bringing the entire school community together.
The Grade 3/4 class played the hand drums which were made last year as part of the Northern Studies program. They were used in the Grand Entry and Closing Ceremony. The Grade 3/4 students also sang the Entry and Closing songs in Ojibwe, with Grade 6 student Hope Shakakeesic-Wesley leading the Grand Entry and Grade 7 student Olivia Ewen singing O'Canada acapella.
The feast also featured handmade vegetable-beef soup and bannock prepared and served by the Grade 4/5 class.
The school welcomed lots of community guests including KCDSB Trustee Vaughn Blab, O.P.P. Constable Neufield, Red Lake Indian Friendship Centre Administrative Assistant Monique Tougas, School Elder Kaaren Dannemann and parents. Students and staff from École Catholique Des Étoiles-Du-Nord also joined in the celebration.
